Tablelands Peer Support Group Story

The Tablelands Peer Support Group met for their second group meeting on 14 July 2021. Running a Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness workshop, with Sarah Dean, Senior Advisor Emergency Management, Tablelands Regional Council.  Sarah provided invaluable local information around the Council’s disaster and emergency planning and preparation, along with key resources that are available to the community.

Sarah directed the group to tools such as council’s Dashboard, which provides up to date information on local situations that impact the community such as road closures, weather events, power outages, emergency situations and evacuation centres.

Building on the information from the Tablelands Regional Council the group then started to focus on their individual emergency planning needs. Using the Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness (P-CEP) workbook, the group moved through the sections of the book, discussing areas like communication in areas with limited mobile coverage and medications requirements in an emergency.

Seventeen attendees joined the meeting and engaged in robust conversation about the importance of individualised planning and preparedness and how and why that can be different for each person and in different areas around the Tablelands, highlighting why this work is so important for people with disability particularly in areas with high frequency of natural disasters.

The Tablelands Peer Support Group will meet again in September and welcomes new members.  The group will meet bi-monthly on the third Wednesday of the month.
