Cairns Peer Support Group Story

The Cairns Peer Support Group met this month to discuss Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness. The group was co-facilitated by Group Convenor Wayne Maitland who shared his personal experience with preparing for an emergency. Cairns Regional Council’s Disaster Management Resilience Officer, Sioux Campbell, joined the discussion and planning session providing invaluable local information around Council’s disaster and emergency planning resources including the Council’s online emergency information Dashboard. Sioux talked about Cairns Regional Council’s phone alert service where people can register their contact details with to receive local emergency alerts.

The group explored the Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness workbook, moving through the sections of the book, while discussing the importance of individualised emergency planning. The workshop attendees talked about the importance of individualised planning and preparedness broadly and what members could do in their own lives to get more prepared for an emergency.
