New Peer Support Group coming to Redcliffe
Queenslanders with Disability Network and Group Convenor Cody Skinner, of the Redcliffe Peer Support Group, met with the Redcliffe community on Wednesday 28 July 2021, to host two community conversations with people with disability and stakeholders to talk about how we could work together to form a Peer Support Group in the area.
The first community conversation was attended by local disability service providers, carers and Moreton Bay Regional Council representatives. The group engaged in thoughtful and robust conversation around the values of peer support and the need in the area for such a group. The group considered barriers, opportunities and themes that could be of interest to local members. Attendees offered ongoing support in promotion with clients and broader community networks.
The second community conversation was attended by people with disability, family members and supporters. This group considered what themes and activities they would like to explore together and where and when would be a good time to meet.
The group came up with some great suggestions for building a strong peer support group including finding interesting venues, engaging with the community bus to support people attending, supporting each other, sharing information and learnings and promotion at the local Sunday markets. The group is keen to meet again so they can discuss some of the following topics: National Disability Insurance Scheme, employment, housing, inclusive access, digital technology, arts and music activities.
The Redcliffe Peer Support Group will meet monthly on the second Friday of the month from 11am to 1pm. People with disability in the Redcliffe area are welcome to join this group, its free to join. The first meeting is scheduled to be held on Friday 13 September at Redcliffe Library, 476 Oxley Ave, Redcliffe QLD 4020.
