E-blast: Toowoomba community comes together for the Changing Lives, Changing Communities forum
QDN and QCOSS continue to hold community forums around the state to bring together all parts of the community to look at how we create truly inclusive and accessible communities. Over 70 people, including people with disability, broader community, service providers and government attended the two day Changing Lives, Changing
Communities forum in Toowoomba last week. QDN acknowledges the commitment of the Toowoomba City Council in supporting and participating in the event.
Michelle Moss, QDN Business Development and Operations Manager said “from day one of the forum we could see positive change evolving. We’ve had many moments of people feeling really connected and thinking about what they can do and how they can contribute to making Toowoomba a more inclusive community”.
Josh Marshall, QDN member and disability advocate from Toowoomba said “this forum is a very good opportunity to actually be heard and to tell people what some of the issues around community accessibility and inclusion are. It’s about education. The communities understanding of the needs of people with disability”.
One of the key outcomes of the Changing Lives, Changing Communities forum falls out of one of the many hands-on sessions, drawing from the strength and wisdom in the room, to develop a vision and key actions for change. Michelle Moss said “it is important that people continue to come together to make those plans a reality”. QDN and QCOSS, in partnership with the ACCQ and local councils, will continue to work with communities to build on the plans and move forward to change lives and communities. The forum is funded by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) under the Information, Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC) funding. This funding focuses on building the capacity of community and mainstream services to be more inclusive of people with disability.
