Making Rent Fair campaign
Overview
QDN members have consistently raised concerns about the housing rental market and QDN has strongly advocated for an accessible, affordable, and fair housing rental market.
To further our advocacy, QDN has joined the Make Renting Fair Alliance which supports reform of our renting laws so that all Queenslanders can feel safe in their home, whether they rent or own. The alliance has been led by Tenants Queensland, which is the peak body funded in this state to represent the interests of people in the social, community and private rental market.
On Friday 18 June 2021, the Honorable Leeanne Enoch MP, Minister for Communities and Housing, Minister for Digital Economy and Minister for the Arts, introduced the Housing Legislation Amendment Bill 2021 (Bill) into the Queensland Parliament. This Bill currently doesn’t include some of the key things that QDN members asked for, including allowing minor modifications and some other key safeguards. It is important that we can ensure that these rental reforms work for all Queenslanders with disability who rent and have laws that protect them and their families.
What we want
The Make Renting Fair in Queensland campaign wants the laws to be fairer for people and families who rent.
We are asking the State Government for:
- No unfair evictions
- Allow minor modifications to a rental home for safety purposes (for example safety grab rails in bathrooms)
- Keep rents fair to keep people in their homes
- Make it easier for people who rent to get their bond money back when moving
- Make sure that people who rent their homes are treated fairly and with honesty
- Keep people together with their pets in their rental homes
- Enforce basic standards for rental homes
- Protect people’s privacy by making sure that they have fair warning before someone enters their home.
