“There's a saying "presume competence" which means "Assume I can do stuff, instead of assuming I can't do stuff". I think that's something peer groups are good at doing. If someone takes time to figure out what they need to say, or they communicate differently, it's not really an issue, and it's just ok to have more time. I feel like in my group it's not about having a magic wand to fix problems, but we always give people space so they are heard. Before I joined a peer group, I was pretty used to going places with my mum and her talking for me. For me the big difference is getting a chance to talk for myself with only disabled people around, not service providers and carers, who don't have the same life experience.”
