QDN attendance at Homelessness Ministerial Advisory Council (HMAC)
Queenslanders with Disability Network (QDN) CEO, Michelle Moss, attended Queensland’s first-ever Homelessness Ministerial Advisory Council (HMAC) meeting last week.
Minister O’Connor has bought together frontline service providers, organisations from across our housing system and all the key parts of government with the focus on delivering better response to the housing crisis. Queenslanders with disability need accessible, affordable, safe housing that means they have a place to call home. HMAC is co-chaired by Assistant Minister Rebecca Young.
Minister O’Connor is setting up two working groups
- One with representatives from South East Queensland councils to drive a more coordinated response
- Another to focus on how supportive housing model can be scaled up as part of the Government’s commitment to deliver 53,500 social homes and improve integration with health and other services
“Housing is a fundamental need and human right and key to enabling people with disability to be included in community and family life, and to participate fully as citizens within Australian society. It is critical that we can look at all parts of the housing system to deliver accessible, affordable, safe housing for people with disability. The current environment offers a unique opportunity for government, industry, business and the community sector to show strong leadership and work collaboratively with people with disability and their families to drive reforms and ensure people with disability have a place to call home.”
QDN attended the second Procurement Ministerial Advisory Council (PMAC)
Michelle Moss, QDN CEO, attended the second Procurement Ministerial Advisory Council (PMAC), as a representative for Queenslanders with Disability Network (QDN). The Council is made up of industry leaders and key representatives from across Queensland.
The Queensland Government is looking at the way government procures to drive better value for taxpayers’ money, create more opportunities for small and family businesses, and to be open to new ways of doing things.
“Since the Games have been announced, QDN has been advocating for the importance of procurement for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games to have clear focus on employment of people with disability and how we procure services and products that can deliver long lasting change. The Game Changers Report gives actions to drive this.
Social and economic benefits of procurement is also a critical as part of Queensland’s every day procurement and it is important that Queensland’s buying power can deliver improved economic and social benefits for Queenslanders with disability.” Michelle Moss CEO QDN.

What's on
Resilient CARE Program
Queenslanders with Disability Network (QDN) as part of the Resilient CARE program is inviting people with disability, families, carers, community members and organisations to share their experiences and ideas to improve health, community and disaster resilience. The Resilient CARE program led by Country to Coast, QLD (CCQ) aims to support people to live their healthiest lives—no matter where they live or what challenges they face due to climate change and natural disasters. Project areas include: Rockhampton, Livingstone, and Gladstone.
We want to know -
- How have climate hazards (heat, floods and bushfires etc) impacted you?
- What challenges have you faced in accessing health care and support during these times?
- What is working well in your local community?
- What ideas do you have to build community resilience - and what role can you play?
Why it matters -
- With climate change bringing more extreme weather events, people with disability experience greater risks to their health and wellbeing.
- Planning together is important so everyone is prepared, supported and safe.
Locations
Let’s talk about what’s working, what needs to improve, and how we can strengthen access to healthcare and support services during extreme weather events. Workshops are designed to be inclusive and accessible for everyone. Emergency Planning with Older People - 2nd June 2025
We invite you to participate in this free event, and share this opportunity with relevant others.
Older people, particularly older First Peoples and older people with disability or long-term conditions, face increased risk during natural disasters. Emergency plans can be tailored to their needs and coordinated with the people, services and communities that support them.
Join us in a community conversation about inclusive emergency planning that focuses on the needs of older people during disaster events in Cairns.
Cairns Regional Council is proud to welcome the University of Sydney’s Collaborating 4 Inclusion team to lead an important community engagement initiative focused on enhancing emergency preparedness for older people. The event will be held on Monday, 2 June 2025, from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Cairns Regional Council Civic Room, located at 119–145 Spence Street, Cairns.
This inclusive event will bring together individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, including community members, service providers, local organisations, and emergency management professionals to share knowledge and collaborate on strategies to improve the safety, wellbeing, and resilience of older people before, during, and after emergencies.
Central to this conversation is the introduction of the Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness (P-CEP) Framework, an evidence-based approach that empowers individuals and communities to tailor preparedness actions to each person’s unique strengths and support needs. The P-CEP Framework offers practical tools and resources that promote meaningful inclusion, planning, and coordination across sectors, with a focus on reducing risk and increasing resilience across the Cairns region. Through this collaborative effort, the aim is to foster a more connected, informed, and resilient environment where older people are supported to plan for emergencies in ways that respect their independence, dignity, and capabilities.
To register for the event, please email Neil James and the Cairns Disaster Management team at CairnsDisasterManagement@cairns.qld.gov.au or 07 4044 3571. Alternatively, if you are not an older person or a service provider / support worker that cares for older people, but are interested in the P-CEP Framework (such as for other people with disability who are also more vulnerable during disasters), feel free to contact the Cairns Disaster Management team to learn more about it.
Feedback reporting feature in 13cabs app
At 13cabs, we’re focused on making travel more accessible and reliable for everyone — including people living with a disability.
For the best experience when booking, tracking your trip, or providing feedback, we recommend using the 13cabs Passenger App.
Here are a few tips on getting the most out of your 13cabs app:
- Preferred Driver Option
After completing a trip, passengers who rate their driver positively will be prompted to add that driver as a Preferred Driver. This means future trip requests will be offered to preferred drivers first when they are nearby. If none are available, the request will be sent to other drivers in the area immediately — with no delay to the booking.
- Submitting a Complaint or Enquiry
Passengers can easily submit feedback, complaints or general enquiries directly through the app. This can be done by selecting the main menu (three lines in the top left corner), choosing Contact Us, and answering a few quick questions. Once submitted, passengers receive a personal response from the team within 48 business hours.
- Travelling with an Assistance Animal
Passengers who travel with an assistance animal can note this in their app profile. This can be done by selecting the main menu (three lines in the top left corner), choosing Profile at the top, then switching on the toggle next to "Will you be travelling with an assistance animal?". This helps the support team prioritise these bookings and ensures appropriate follow-up if needed.
Stories That Matter – Disability & Resilience in the Bush
Life in Outback Queensland comes with unique challenges—but also incredible resilience and community spirit.
Their new video series, "Living the Best Life in the Bush with Disability," tells the powerful real-life stories of people with disability thriving in remote Queensland.
- Adam Ballard – A Longreach local with Williams Syndrome who’s built a meaningful life through work, volunteering, and radio.
- Daisy Walton – A First Nations woman with a visual impairment embracing creativity, confidence, and new skills.
- Jacques Jacobie – A determined advocate who, after a spinal cord injury, returned to work and pushed 29km in his wheelchair to raise funds for a friend.
These stories highlight both the challenges and the triumphs of living with disability in remote areas.
Watch now → www.oil.org.au/stories
Please take a moment to watch, share, and amplify these voices. Disability in the bush deserves to be seen, heard, and supported.
