    Disability Inclusion

Phase 2 has started for the National Disability Inclusion Project

This 2-year project aims to help local government put disability inclusion plans and strategies into practical, measurable outcomes for people with disability in their communities.

The project is led by Community of Practice members from 38 local governments in metropolitan, regional, rural and remote local government areas across Australia. Meetings with Community of Practice members are designed to help share real-world examples of disability inclusion initiatives and resources, so that can be applied in other local government areas.

The Community of Practice have developed six priority areas for the project:

    • Community inclusion
    • Access and mobility
    • Communication and information accessibility
    • Disability inclusion planning and implementation
    • Inclusive employment and procurement
    • Emerging issues, reform and evaluation of outcomes

The Community of Practice will also use the Disability Inclusion Guide for Local Councils and resources developed in Phase 1 of the project to help strengthen disability inclusion capability for other local government and councils that are not represented in the Community of Practice.

    Employment

Fairer pay for health, disability and community services workers

The Australian Government is investing $630 million to deliver fairer pay to over 460,000 health, disability and community services workers. This investment is a result of the Fair Work Commission’s findings and the Australian Government’s reforms to put gender equality at the centre of the Fair Work Act. The investment will mean that over 128,000 organisations funded under 92 programs will receive extra funding to help better support the workforce and therefore bring higher quality services to consumers.

The amendments mean that there are new requirements for operators and providers across all public transport networks including buses, trains, trams, ferries, taxis, and aircraft.

    1.  in a variety of formats; and
    2.  with as much notice as can be reasonably provided in the circumstances.

An operator or provider must provide staff with the following training:

    1. initial disability awareness training;
    2. annual refresher training

    The training must also be:

    1. tailored to meet the roles and responsibilities of each staff member; and
    2. developed and reviewed in consultation with people with disability, or groups representing people with disability, to ensure the content is appropriate; and
