Summary Report - Queensland Roundtable Driving Change: Better Health for People with Intellectual Disability
Queenslanders with Disability Network (QDN) in partnership with the National Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health, the Queensland Centre of Excellence in Autism and Intellectual Disability Health (QCEAIDH) brought together people with intellectual disability, families, and key decision makers, as well as experts and professionals from health, disability, and advocacy organisations in Brisbane on 12 June 2026.
We shared what is happening now in Queensland across health and disability, and we discussed what has changed since the release of the Disability Royal Commission and the National Roadmap for Improving the Health of People with Intellectual Disability.
Thank you to our amazing speakers, presenters, panellists and attendees for sharing your views and experiences on these important topics.
At the roundtable, the discussions identified five priority areas for reform:
People with intellectual disability must be visible and counted within the health system through consistent disability identifiers, communication support information and improved health data.
Reasonable adjustments should become standard practice throughout the healthcare journey and embedded within routine clinical care.
Consumer and workforce capability must be strengthened through mandatory education, lived experience leadership and ongoing professional development.
Specialist intellectual disability pathways should provide timely access to coordinated care, specialist expertise and improved transitions across health, disability and community services.
Strong partnerships, governance and accountability are needed to implement outstanding recommendations from the Disability Royal Commission and the National Roadmap for Improving the Health of People with Intellectual Disability.
Discussion also explored what needs to happen first, who needs to be involved, and how this links to the Disability Royal Commission and National Roadmap priorities.
