Let’s address barriers to participating in physical activity in Queensland

As part of hosting the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Queensland Government has committed to engaging another 110,000 people with disability in sport by 2032. The Empower project will play an important role in this, but we need your help.

Count Me In is an important survey to help us understand the enablers and barriers to people with disability participating in sport.

Update on Taxi Subsidy Scheme for NDIS Participants

Taxi Subsidy Scheme (TSS) arrangements for National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participants have been extended for a further two years, until 31 December 2028.

This means NDIS participants who are also Queensland TSS members can continue to use their TSS membership card to access subsidised taxi travel during this period. The extension does not change the existing TSS processes for members.

The extension provides continued access to transport support while the Commonwealth and state and territory governments work towards longer-term transport support arrangements for NDIS participants. The Queensland Government will continue to work with the Commonwealth on this matter.

This extension relates only to the eligibility of NDIS participants to access TSS subsidies. The Queensland Government remains committed to funding the TSS on an ongoing basis.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads is writing directly to affected TSS members to advise them of the extension.

New Resource – Disaster Preparedness for Disability Accommodation Providers

Disability accommodation providers have a responsibility to plan ahead, and to make sound decisions quickly when conditions change.

QDN worked in partnership with the University of Sydney’s Collaborating4Inclusion research team and National Disability Services (NDS) to co-design resources with disability accommodation providers.

These free resources help providers get ready before an emergency, make safer decisions during one, and learn from it afterwards – with the people they support at the centre.

A practical tool to support frontline disability accommodation staff and managers to make placement decisions during emergencies.

    Employment

Improving employment opportunities for men who have fluctuating disability

A new report has been published exploring how the experiences of Australian men with disability can change over time and how this may impact employment across different stages of life.

By outlining which groups of men may be at greater risk of employment challenges, researchers hope this report can help inform policies and supports that can improve employment opportunities for men who have fluctuating disability.

    Key findings include:

    • Education was linked to positive employment transitions
    • Older men with decreasing or fluctuating functional difficulty were less likely to enter the workforce than younger men in the same group
    • Older men with increasing or fluctuating functional difficulty were more likely to move into self-employment

    Health

Australian women will be able to receive cheaper medication thanks to new pharmacy trial

This 12-month trial will allow all women to receive treatment for uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) and hormonal contraception at a lower rate.

Women will also be able to obtain hormonal contraception without going to the doctor, if it is permitted under the rules of that state or territory. It is estimated that this trial will help 900,000 women save up to $38 per visit, as a maximum price of $25 can be charged per script.

Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) Annual Report Released

The latest Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) Annual Report revealed that there were over 130,000 applications at the end of the 2025 – 26 reporting period, despite only being funded to manage 62,000 applications annually. This data aligns with reports of staff shortages and increased wait times for NDIS participants.

The report also shows that there has been an approximate 18% rise in NDIS applications, increasing from 7,935 in 2024-2025 to 9,351 in 2025-26.

New Report: Eligibility, Access and Utilisation of the NDIS for People with Disability from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds

A new report has been published which explores how people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds (CALD) engage with the NDIS. The report compares the experience CALD people have with the NDIS to that of people with disability who are not from CALD backgrounds.

One of the key findings from the report are that people from CALD backgrounds tend to apply and are accepted into the NDIS at lower rates than other people with disability, and that this is contributed to factors at an individual, service and systems level being more complex for people from CALD backgrounds.
