Joint Statement regarding the Livable Housing Design Standards
Queensland Continues to Build Homes For All, Now and Into the Future.
As 50 organisations representing people with disability, older people, families, carers, and the disability, housing and community sectors, we welcome the Queensland Government’s decision to retain implementation of the Livable Housing Design Standard (LHDS) within the National Construction Code (NCC).
The Queensland Government response to the Queensland Productivity Commission Final Report was released on 21 January 2026. This decision confirms Queensland’s commitment to accessible, safe, and future-ready homes for all Queenslanders—homes that enable people to live independently, age in place, and be part of their communities. Inclusive design benefits not only individuals and families but the broader economy and society.
By continuing with the LHDS, Queensland can ensure:
reduced pressure on health, aged care, and disability systems;
avoided costs of retrofitting inaccessible homes;
national consistency for builders and consumers;
progress toward a housing system that works for every Queenslander, now and in the future.
We acknowledge and thank Minister O’Connor and the Queensland Government for listening to the voices of people with disability, their families and the disability, housing, aged and community service sectors.
We look forward to continuing to work together to build a more inclusive, accessible, safe, resilient and equitable Queensland where people can have a place to call home.
