New ‘Yellow Card’ disability worker screening process
From 1 February 2021, a new worker screening process commenced in Queensland for workers that provide supports and services to people with disability. It replaces the existing ‘yellow card’ screening.
In Queensland, under the new system, plan and self-managed NDIS participants can choose whether they require their non-registered workers to get a clearance. However, all workers employed through registered NDIS providers will be required to get a clearance.
QDN, in partnership with ADA Australia, ATSIDNQ, and CRU, hosted an online forum on 18 February 2021 about how these changes will impact NDIS participants who self-manage and plan-manage.
Fran Vicary, State Director (Queensland) NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, presented on the national approach to safety and quality and discussed how the NDIS Commission will work to improve the safety and quality of services delivered by NDIS providers.

The NDIS Worker Screening Database is an important tool that enables providers and self-managed participants to stay informed about the screening status of workers providing NDIS supports and services. To request access to the NDIS Worker Screening Database, click here.
Michelle Bullen, Director, Safeguards, Disability Connect Queensland, presented on the Worker Screening Unit within the Department of Seniors, Disability Services and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships who manage the application process for workers and volunteers seeking a clearance to deliver disability supports and services in Queensland. This new system is being implement in an effort to create safe environments and improve the quality of services and supports being delivered to people with disability. Information can be found here.

We also heard from Peter and Leigh about what is important to them when it comes to quality and safeguards and self-managing their NDIS package. If you are a person with disability and want to discuss self-managing NDIS plans with peers, check out QDN’s self-management peer support group. People with disability are welcome to join this online group which meets on the fourth Thursday of the month. More details are available at Peer Support Groups – Queenslanders with Disability Network or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
